Biography
Joseph Mwaura teaches and researches in the areas of corporate law, constitutional law and human rights and he has recently held a Visiting Fellowship at Harvard Law School’s Human Rights Program where he undertook research on the definition of parameters of corporate complicity in human rights violations and the viability of constitutional regulation of corporations. Prior to this, he completed a variety of research projects in this area and also served as an expert researcher for the International Commission of Jurists’ Expert Legal Panel on Corporate Complicity in International Crimes where he was focusing on the role of corporate structures in determining liability within corporate groups.
He read law at the University of Nairobi and, after doing his pupilage and being admitted as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, he taught law at the Kenya School of Professional Studies and later completed an LLM degree in International Law at Staffordshire University. He then worked as a Visiting Lecturer and conducted his doctoral research on the regulation of company directors at the University of Wolverhampton until 2002 when he was appointed to the position of Lecturer in Law at Queen's. He has been a Visiting Scholar at the University of Washington and the University of Ghana and he is a member of the Higher Education Academy, the Society of Legal Scholars, and the Law Society of Kenya.
He has been involved, in various capacities, in the promotion of equality of opportunity and good relations in Northern Ireland and he is currently serving on the Advisory Board of the Northern Ireland Council for Ethnic Minorities (NICEM).
