Stephen Livingstone Scholarship


In honour of our late colleague, Professor Stephen Livingstone (1961-2004), the School of Law at Queen’s University has established a studentship in the areas of human rights law or public law.  This fund is supported also by donations from Stephen’s family and friends.  Stephen was Professor of Human Rights Law, a former Head of the School of Law and Director of the Human Rights Centre, as well as a renowned human rights activist and Commissioner on the Northern Ireland Equality Commission. 

The studentship is designed for a suitably qualified graduate ideally with experience of working in a human rights based NGO or similar organisation either in the EU or beyond, who wishes to undertake a  

(i)   Taught LLM in Human Rights at QUB

(ii)  Research MPhil degree in the areas of human rights or public law, including prison law and those aspects of legal theory that were of interest to Professor Livingstone -

or

-  a suitably qualified EU applicant who wishes to undertake research for a PhD in the area of human rights law or public law, including prison law and those aspects of legal theory that were of interest to Professor Livingstone. 

The successful applicant will receive an award which will cover fees, and a living allowance up to £12,000 for one year only. (Those students enrolling on the 3-year Ph.D. course must re-apply annually for consideration).
